English Folktales, edited by Dan Keding and Amy Douglas
‘Winner of the 2007 Storytelling World Award for best
storytelling collection’
This
collection of traditional English folktales reflects the depth and
diversity of the folk heritage of England, and illustrates the ties
between stories, land, and people. The editors present an enticing
assortment of more than 50 tales, gathered from practising English
storytellers and organized into sections based on broad themes such as
"The Fool in All His Glory," "Wily Wagers and Tall Tales," "Holy Days
and Days of Heroes,".
There's
a story for every listener: from "Teeny Tiny" and "The Pixies' Beds" for
young children to spooky ghost stories and witch tales, such as "Wild
Edric" and "Jenny Greenteeth" for older readers and listeners. For each
tale, the authors cite a region of origin.
Like
other titles in the series, the book contains background information:
notes on the tales, a brief history of England, a map, photographs, a
glossary and brief biographies of the storytellers.

Passage From Singout!, Winter 2003:
"Storyteller Amy Douglas has given us a fine recording of stories that come from
her own backyard, Shropshire in England. The stories here are derived from the folklore of
her home region. Among these tales are some of the first stories that she heard, stories
that inspired her to make telling her career. These stories represent a sense of place, a
belonging that is so often missed in a storyteller's repertoire. The Wrekin, Mitchell's
Fold, and the Stiperstones are all sites you can see when you visit Shropshire and when
you do you now will have the stories that go with the places. The stories themselves are
told with affection and skillyou can feel the story and you can see it in your
mind's eye as it unfolds through Amy's telling. This is a celebration of a storyteller's
home. Amy Douglas's Stories of Shropshire is an enjoyable CD of first-rate
stories. Highly recommended. Dan Keding

Evesham Voices
Personal memories of ordinary people give us a unique and powerful view of life in the past. These reminiscences of Evesham people were collected by Genevieve Tudor and Amy
Douglas in a project in conjunction with Wychaven District Council and West Midlands Arts.
They have interviewed residents from four sheltered housing accommodation schemes about
their childhood, schooldays, and working lifethe good times and the not-so-good. The
resulting book forms a record of everyday life in the town as seen through the eyes of its
people. There are fond memories of street games, church and chapel events, carnivals and
shopping, but there are also recollections of the hardships of war and trying to live on a
low income before the advent of the Welfare State. A unique record of Evesham life in the
20th century.
